According to the three key performance measures, the hotel industry in the Americas declined during the month of June, according to Smith Travel Research (STR).Compared to the same period of the previous year, occupancy in the industry fell 9.7% to end the month by 61.3%. The daily average rate dropped by 10.6% to end the month at $97.96. Revenue per available room during the month decreased 19.4% to end at $60.05.
Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, was the only city that registered an increase in occupancy, increasing by 13.7% to 61.3%.
"While we're not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel yet, some occasional blinks are starting to show up, especially as it relates to filing the lawsuit," said Mark Lomanno, president of STR, who believes that even though the numbers show a further drop, the level of decline was the best of all of 2009.
