The Spanish hotel chain that has a presence in Latin America announced that it was certified under the international standard ISO 50.001 that establishes a framework to develop, implement and improve energy efficiency management systems, thanks to its Environmental Plan 2008 - 2012.
The certification was approved following an audit by TÜV Rheiland, an independent international organization with more than 125 years of experience in evaluating companies in any sector of activity.
The company said that during the first half of 2011 it achieved a 15.63% reduction in energy, in addition to 28.33% savings in water consumption and 26.83% less waste produced. To this is added the reduction of CO2 emissions that reached 32.41%, thanks to an environmental management plan.
The director of Environment and Engineering of NH Hoteles, Luis Ortega, said that this certification "recognizes a project that began in 2003 and that, thanks to the effort that has been made in our hotels during this time, has allowed us to generate a culture of efficiency and respect for the environment."
He stressed that NH is the first hotel chain to receive this seal and recognized that today 52% of the chain's facilities already consume some type of renewable energy such as solar panels (4,477 m2 of plates have been installed) that generate four million kwh per year, saving 342 tons of oil.
THE ISO 50.001 is the second recognition of environmental management that the chain receives in 2011, after in June the recognition was achieved to the calculation of its carbon footprint in its more than 60,000 rooms distributed in 400 hotels.
