Due to alleged conflict of interest, the Colombian government suspended support for the initiative by which the multinational company Six Senses would build a seven-star hotel in the Tayrona Park area, home to several indigenous tribes.
This was confirmed by the Minister of Environment, Frank Pearl, after a meeting with the president, Juan Manuel Santos. The head of the environment portfolio stated that a brother and cousin of the President would have a stake in the society that sought to build the complex.
"The President was clear in affirming that any business or initiative related to the State, in which his relatives had or had some participation, is not done. That's why the possible eco-tourism project in Tayrona Park is dead," Pearl said.
This decision puts an end to the controversy unleashed in the mass media and social networks, where the Tayrona Libre initiative had gained strength in order to defend the environmental and cultural heritage of the area, which enjoys special protection for being classified in the category of National Natural Park.
The construction project of the hotel had been announced by Juan Manuel Santos himself, who had assured that it was a foreign investment project that had the support of the indigenous communities that inhabit the area.
