During 2011, the hotel industry in the United States opened 373 properties equivalent to 38,409 rooms, which means an increase of 0.5% in the existing supply of this type of space, according to data provided by STR/McGraw Hill.
"In December 2010, 75,747 rooms were projected to open in the United States during 2011 and we had 38,409, which means that 50.8% of expectations were met," said Duane Vinson, representative of STR.
On the segment measurement scale, the upper-middle-range opened the most rooms with 172 projects and 15,579 rooms, and reported a 36.6% decrease in the number of projects opened in 2011 compared to 2010. For its part, the high segment opened 4 properties with 8,557 rooms and the middle segment opened 45 hotels for 4,051 bedrooms.
It should be noted that the luxury segment only opened 2 properties for 1,261 rooms.
"At the end of 2011 there were 70,291 rooms scheduled to open in 2012, of which 40,371 are under construction. With a significant number of rooms in final planning (110,836) and a 7.9% increase in pre-planning as of last month, we will continue to closely monitor overall development for a rebound in supply in the coming years," Vinson added.
By 2012, the country is expected to open 649 properties with 70,291 rooms.
