About $350,000 each year a beach hotel in Cancun pays for protection insurance for its guests.
The costs of the policies have reported a significant increase as well as the acquisition of the same, since they have become a mandatory requirement for a hotel establishment to obtain its operating license.
According to Roberto Cintrón Díaz, general director of the Flamingo Hotel, the rate depends on the type of coverage required by the company and the size of the hotel. A factor that is also evaluated when granting a policy is the areas available to the establishment.
As reported by insurers in the area, the most requested insurance is the one that offers coverage against hurricanes, this is also the most expensive: after 2006, when that region was hit by Hurricane Wilma, this service came to cost US $ 500,000, today it can be purchased for a value of US $ 350,000.
Hotel entrepreneurs argue that there are not many incidents or accidents that are reported in their establishments and that, generally, occur during the holiday season, especially in underage guests.
Roberto Citrón Díaz explained that there is only one situation in which the insurance does not offer coverage and that is when the incident occurs due to the direct responsibility of the guest, either because he is in a state of drunkenness or under the effects of some hallucinogen or because the visitor acts improperly.
