More than 60 hotel workers have been laid off in recent days in the coastal area of Tulum, in Quintana Roo, because of the lack of tourists in the region. This is the consequence of the closure of four hotels and two restaurants.
So far this year, the low seasons have hit the tourism, hotel and restaurant sector of Cacún crudely, causing the closure of dozens of companies and shops.
These closures have wreaked havoc on the families of the approximately 60 employees who have been temporarily dismissed, during October and through mid-November.
In an interview with the newspaper La Verdad de Quintana Roo, Matteo Guerra, owner of the restaurant "Matteo", said that due to force majeure the place had to be closed since from last September 15 to date approximately four diners were received daily.
The same fate befell the restaurant Ana y José, because its dynamics depended on one of the hotels located next to the business which closed due to lack of tourists.
The owners of these places maintained that while the season recovers, they will be working on the remodeling of their establishments. They will also take the opportunity to update some services they offered such as massages and tours so that tourism feels comfortable and revisits the destination.
