Cemex launches Ecoperando Certification for sustainable buildings

Mexico. More and more sustainability in our environment is becoming more relevant, which is why the company Cemex launched the Ecoperando Certification and awarded the first to the Lucena housing development, a residential apartment building located in Valle Oriente, San Pedro Garza García.

Vicente Saisó Alva, corporate director-Sustainability, explained that the Ecoperando Building Certification accredits projects in their design phases or constructions that comply with sustainable guidelines.

For the construction sector, this type of certification marks where construction has to go in our country, it must be more efficient by delivering products of higher quality and comfort and that also have a lower cost of their operation throughout their useful life, said Saisó Alva.

"This certification measures the sustainable performance of a building, taking into account its expected and actual energy performance. This certification can be done to new and existing buildings that meet sustainable criteria above the market standard," he added.

He mentioned that it will not be Cemex who carries out the certifications, since they are not energy experts; but they will always do it hand in hand with specialized companies, in this case of Lucena, the company that carried out the audit was Three, environmental and ecological architecture consultancy.

And he stressed that Lucena, a residential complex, has energy savings of up to 43 percent, compared to a conventional building.

"However, it is difficult to specify it because it depends on several variables, but if compared with the standards that also measure energy efficiency in the United States, the savings reach 43 percent," said Pablo Cotera Elizondo, director of Projects & Construction of Promotora Elizondo (PESA), the real estate developer of the Lucena project.

At a press conference, Saisó Alva explained that Cemex with this certification comes to complement the existing LEED certification,

"We don't intend to compete, but rather to be a complement. We will focus on recognizing those projects that save energy, water and reduce environmental impact," he said.
