Engineer Abel Ramirez Serrano, director of Sustainable Solutions at Leviton MFG for Latin America, noted that nearly 40 percent of a company's electricity bills are due to lighting. This was said during the conference "Recommendations and guidelines for energy efficiency: lighting control, submetering and energy verification", organized by the IMEI, on June 23, at the Hacienda de los Morales, Mexico City.
Engineer Ramirez, who has more than 32 years of experience in the industry, noted that the ASHRAE 90.1-2010 standard contributes to the reduction of energy use by setting the minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design of most buildings, except for low-rise residential buildings.
Compliance with the ASHRAE 90.1 standard applies to all new construction projects and refurbishment projects involving the modification of more than 10 percent of lighting loads."
He indicated that all spaces must have a manual or automatic ignition lighting control for less than 50 percent of the lighting load.
According to engineer Abel, some spaces of a building require an occupancy sensor that is activated after 30 minutes of vacancy, such as classrooms, conference and meeting rooms, dining rooms, offices of less than 23 square meters and toilets, among others.
"In addition to controls to turn off all lighting, enclosed spaces should have controls that reduce lighting from 30 to 70 percent of the total load," said the speaker.
