According to expert geologists, it is expected that in the coming days Mexico will have an earthquake greater than 7.5 degrees whose epicenter will be on the coast of the State of Guerrero, in the Pacific.
The Secretary of Civil Protection in the Federal District, Fausto Lugo García, said in an interview with Spain's El País newspaper that Mexico City is currently prepared for an earthquake like the one it faced in 1985 that had a magnitude of 8.1 degrees. However, some professionals maintained in the same medium that although today the destruction would not be as great as at that time they question that everything possible has been done in terms of security.
Eduardo Reinoso, researcher of Seismological Engineering at the UNAM, said that for some years buildings have been built in Mexico City that do not take into account the frequent seismic activity of the city and attributes this fact to the lack of information and the scarce control that exists by the competent authorities.
Therefore, this year the Infrastructure Institute was created that will be in charge of reviewing all the constructions of the Federal District, because although it has one of the most updated building regulations in the world, it is not fully complied with, as admitted by the expert Javier Aguirre.
