According to the Potential Impact Evaluation (PIE) study, carried out by the Mediterranean Building Tethinking for Energy Efficiency Improvement (Marie), "buildings should be rehabilitated in a comprehensive way to achieve long-term energy savings".
The study aims to stimulate the comprehensive rehabilitation of a park of buildings in the Mediterranean, and with this it has been possible to establish that this action will reduce energy consumption through the implementation of structural measures and different from conventional ones.
These conventional measures refer to the change of air conditioning equipment or boilers that, although they allow energy savings, this is achieved in the long term, the study indicates. While actions such as the rehabilitation of the structure of the building, the insulation of walls or roofs will allow to achieve greater energy efficiency.
The Marie project started in 2011 and has a budget of six million euros (about four million dollars).
The initiative is co-financed by the Med programme of the European Union and by the different entities participating in the project. Led by the Departament de Territori i Sostenibilitat of the Generalitat de Catalunya, it has the participation of Mediterranean regions from countries such as France, Italy, Greece, Malta, Slovenia, Montenegro, Cyprus, Portugal and Spain
For its part, IREC is the reference research centre for the energy sector in Catalonia. Created in 2008, it is specialized in Research and Technology Development activities related to energy saving and efficiency and renewable energies.
