Bifacial photovoltaic modules in the first low-CO2 project in France

International. A total of 16 million watts (Megawatts or MW) of special low-carbon bifacial photovoltaic modules will be supplied to the French company EDF Renewables, by Trina Solar, a provider of intelligent solutions for solar energy.

EDF Renewables is developing two projects in Aramon (with a maximum peak power of 5 MW) and Saint Pargoire (with its similar 11 MW). Trina Solar is delivering a total of 44,790 units of its Duomax Twin twin-glass bifacial module in its low-carbon version, with power outputs ranging from 350 to a maximum power of 365 watts. EDF Renewables covers all sectors of expertise, from project development, to project construction, operations and maintenance.

These two projects developed under the specific restrictions for the CRE4.1 and CRE4.2 tenders are the first projects in France to use bifacial dual crystal modules with low carbon dioxide (CO2) content. Once in operation, the photovoltaic plants will produce 100% renewable energy that will cover the consumption of more than 8,400 French inhabitants. The plants will be spread over approximately 18 hectares and will avoid the emission of approximately 15,000 tons of CO2 per year for 30 years.

The double-glazed Duomax Twin bifacial module features perc (passivated emitter rear cell) monocrystalline cells, a technology that allows greater absorption of sunlight and generates higher internal reflection in the cells, which increases the total energy production through generation from the front and back, with an additional energy gain of up to 25%, depending on the albedo (percentage of radiation that any surface reflects with respect to the radiation that falls on it) and the assembly. The system voltage of 1,500 volts further reduces system balance costs (BOS).

Trina Solar's double-glazed technology has been recognized with 26 patents so far. The durable dual glass structure of the module, made with high-quality and encapsulated solar glass, resists harsh environmental conditions and protects solar cells from strong moisture, preventing energy loss from PID (induced potential degradation). The product has a wide range of applications and is compatible with all major solar tracking systems.

Gonzalo de la Vina, Europe Business Module Director at Trina Solar, says: "We are honoured to have been chosen by EDF Renewables for these two projects in France that are being developed under the specific restrictions for the French tenders CRE4.1 and CRE4.2. using our low-carbon bifacial dual crystal monocrystalline PERC modules."

Deliveries of modules of 16 MW in total are expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2019.
