International. With Sodexo's support, U.S. teachers now have a new resource specifically designed to help students explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) applications in environmental sustainability issues and real-world discarded food.
Teachers are invited to use a new STEM Knowledge Video Spark 101 to engage students in an example of authentic problem solving based on real challenges faced by employers.
In Sodexo's Spark 101 challenge, students are asked to apply their knowledge of analytics and environmental science to help The Sodexo customer reduce the amount of discarded food that is typically sent to landfills.
In 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) calculated that although there are nearly 60,000 new jobs in the United States annually, only 35,000 skilled graduates are projected to fill them.
Of those open positions:
- 50% will be in administration and business
- 27% will be in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields
- 12% will be in education, communication and government services
- 15% of jobs will be in food and biomaterials production
